Who are NiziU?
NiziU (니쥬) are a Japanese girl group formed by JYP Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment Japan, a flagship example of JYP's "K-pop 3.0: Globalization by Localization" strategy — applying the Korean idol system to a homegrown Japanese group. The nine members are Mako, Rio, Maya, Riku, Ayaka, Mayuka, Rima, Miihi and Nina.
Nizi Project
The group was assembled through Nizi Project, a 2020 reality-survival program that whittled 26 contestants down to the final line-up, aired weekly in Japan. The show itself became a cultural event, building an audience for the group before it had even debuted.
Pre-debut phenomenon: "Make You Happy"
Their digital pre-debut EP Make You Happy arrived in mid-2020, and its bright title track became an instant phenomenon — topping major Japanese charts, reaching number two on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and charting internationally. Its "WimWiF" (wink-and-fist-pump) dance went massively viral, making NiziU a household name in Japan before their official debut.
Debut and beyond
NiziU made their official debut on 2 December 2020 with "Step and a Step", and went on to a Korean debut on 30 October 2023 with the single album Press Play, bridging the J-pop and K-pop worlds.
Recent work
In 2026 they revisited the song that made them, releasing Make You Happy (2026 ver.), a fresh re-version of their iconic breakout hit.
