Who is Hariharan?

Hariharan (born 3 April 1955) is a celebrated Indian playback, ghazal and bhajan singer who performs fluently across Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. A two-time National Award winner and Padma Shri recipient, he is revered both as a master of the ghazal and as one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music — an artist whose voice bridges the classical and the contemporary.

A classically rooted voice

Born into a deeply musical South Indian family — his parents were Carnatic musicians — Hariharan trained rigorously in Hindustani classical music and absorbed Carnatic traditions at home. That dual grounding gave him exceptional control, ornamentation and emotional depth, qualities that would let him move effortlessly between devotional music, film songs and the demanding art of the ghazal.

The ghazal master

Hariharan built a distinguished parallel career as a ghazal singer, releasing a long line of acclaimed albums — among them celebrated works that paired his voice with master instrumentalists — and winning a devoted following among connoisseurs of the form. His gift for honouring the ghazal's classical discipline while keeping it warm and accessible helped carry the tradition to new generations who might otherwise never have discovered it.

A career across languages

Few Indian singers have been as genuinely multilingual. Hariharan has recorded extensively not only in Hindi but across Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu cinema, working with leading composers including A. R. Rahman, and earning a place among the most respected playback voices in both the North and the South.

Colonial Cousins and fusion

With musician Lesle Lewis he formed the duo Colonial Cousins, whose self-titled fusion album became a landmark — the first Indian act to be featured on MTV Unplugged — blending Indian classical melody with Western pop and soul in a way few had dared to attempt.

Playback and devotional work

In Hindi and South Indian cinema he is loved for songs like "Tu Hi Re", "Chanda Re" and the title track of Roja, and he is equally celebrated for his devotional recordings. On LyricsSol he features on the timeless Shree Hanuman Chalisa, a definitive rendition of the centuries-old prayer.

Honours and legacy

He won the National Award for the song "Mere Dushman Mere Bhai" from Border (1998) and again for the Marathi song "Jiv Rangla" from Jogwa, and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2004 for his contribution to the arts. Across nearly five decades — as a film playback singer, a ghazal exponent, a devotional voice and a fusion pioneer — Hariharan has remained a benchmark for vocal artistry, discipline and versatility, influencing generations of Indian singers who followed.
