Who is Shilpa Rao?
Shilpa Rao (born 11 April 1984) is an acclaimed Indian playback singer known for a warm, husky, instantly identifiable voice and a sophisticated sense of phrasing. Equally at home with classical-leaning melody and contemporary pop, she has become one of Bollywood's most respected female vocalists.
Early life and training
Born in Jamshedpur into a Telugu family, she trained seriously in Hindustani classical music from a young age, studying under her father and later under the noted Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. That classical grounding gives her singing its depth and control.
Breakthrough
Composer Mithoon gave Rao her Hindi debut with "Javeda Zindagi" from Anwar (2007) while she was still in college, but it was "Khuda Jaane" from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) that brought her widespread fame and marked her as a major new voice.
Signature songs and awards
She has since delivered a string of memorable songs including "Bulleya", "Manmarziyan", "Kalank", "Hardum Humdum" and the timeless cover "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo". She won the Mirchi Music Award for "Bulleya" from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Ghungroo" from War (2020).
Recent work
In 2026 she featured on the Cocktail 2 soundtrack with Jag Se Laaj, continuing a career built on artistry rather than gimmickry.
Legacy
Admired by peers and composers alike, Shilpa Rao represents a strain of Bollywood singing where technique, restraint and emotional truth matter more than spectacle — making her a favourite for songs that need to last.
