Who is Tulus?
Tulus (born Muhammad Tulus on 20 August 1987 in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra) is one of Indonesia's most beloved and successful singer-songwriters. Of Minangkabau descent, he is known for a warm, smooth baritone, jazz- and soul-tinged pop, and thoughtful, literary songwriting that has made him a defining voice of modern Indonesian music.
Early life
He studied architecture at Parahyangan Catholic University in Bandung and is largely self-taught as a musician — a background that feeds the considered, designed feel of his songs and album concepts. He built his career independently rather than through a major label.
Albums and rise
His self-titled debut Tulus (2011) was followed by Gajah (2013) and Monokrom (2016), each cementing his reputation for elegant, emotionally resonant pop. His fourth album, Manusia (2022), was a landmark: it debuted at number three on Spotify's global Top Albums Debut chart — a first for an Indonesian artist — and its single "Hati-Hati di Jalan" became a regional phenomenon, charting on Spotify's Global Daily list.
Signature songs
Beyond "Hati-Hati di Jalan", his best-loved tracks include "Sepatu", "Gajah", "Pamit", "Monokrom" and "Manusia Kuat" — songs that pair plain-spoken Indonesian lyrics with rich, jazzy arrangements.
Recent work
In 2026 he made his comeback with Teh Hijau, his first new single in four years — a reflective Indonesian pop song that quickly went viral at home.
