Who is Ariana Grande?
Ariana Grande is an American singer, songwriter and actress, and one of the defining pop voices of her generation. Born on 26 June 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida, she is known for a four-octave soprano range, a fondness for the whistle register, and a run of albums that have kept her at the front of pop for more than a decade. She is also among the most-streamed artists in history.
Early life and acting
Grande began on stage, appearing in the Broadway musical 13 in 2008 as a teenager. She then became familiar to a younger audience through Nickelodeon, playing Cat Valentine on the sitcom Victorious and its spin-off Sam & Cat. Acting has remained part of her career: in 2024 she starred as Glinda in the film adaptation of Wicked, a role she reprised in Wicked: For Good in 2025.
Music breakthrough
Her debut album Yours Truly (2013) entered the US chart at number one, powered by the single "The Way". My Everything (2014) followed with "Problem", "Break Free" and "Bang Bang", establishing her as a fixture of pop radio. Dangerous Woman (2016) pushed her sound in a bolder direction, and its era brought some of her most enduring singles. Throughout this period she toured internationally and built one of the largest followings of any artist on social media.
Sweetener, thank u next and beyond
The back half of the 2010s was a remarkable stretch. Sweetener (2018) won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, and its follow-up Thank U, Next (2019) arrived only months later, led by the culture-shifting title track and "7 Rings". Positions (2020) leaned into a smoother R&B register. In 2024 she returned with Eternal Sunshine, her first album in nearly four years, which again debuted at number one.
Sound and style
Grande's music blends pop, R&B and, increasingly, a light, breathy production style built around her voice. She writes and co-produces her material, works closely with a small circle of collaborators, and is known for melodic runs and a conversational, intimate delivery even on her biggest records. Her catalogue is full of chart-topping singles, including "Thank U, Next", "7 Rings", "positions", "Rain On Me" with Lady Gaga, "Stuck with U" with Justin Bieber, and "yes, and?".
petal and "Hate That I Made You Love Me"
In 2026 she announced her eighth studio album, petal, set for release on 31 July. Its lead single, "Hate That I Made You Love Me", written and produced with Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 — her tenth chart-topper there — and topped the charts in the UK and several other countries. Grande called it "one of my favorite songs I'll ever write".
Legacy
Across eight albums, multiple Grammy Awards and a parallel career in film, Ariana Grande has become one of the most commercially successful and influential pop artists of the 21st century. Her blend of technical vocal skill, songwriting and cross-media reach has kept her central to pop culture from her teenage television days through to her current run as both a recording artist and a leading lady on the big screen.
