Who is Arijit Singh?
Arijit Singh (born 25 April 1987) is an Indian singer, composer and music producer widely regarded as the defining male voice of modern Hindi cinema — and, by streaming numbers, one of the most-listened-to artists on the planet. His soft, conversational, emotionally exact delivery has made him the automatic first choice for Bollywood's biggest love songs for well over a decade, to the point that an Arijit Singh ballad has become a genre of its own.
Early life and training
He was born in Jiaganj, in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, to a Punjabi-Sikh father, Surinder Singh, and a Bengali-Hindu mother, Aditi Singh, into a household where music was everyday life — his grandmother sang, a maternal aunt was trained in Indian classical music, and an uncle played the tabla. Encouraged by his parents, he received formal grounding in Hindustani classical music under Rajendra Prasad Hazari and in tabla under Dhirendra Prasad Hazari, while studying at Raja Bijay Singh High School and Sripat Singh College. That classical foundation underpins the control and restraint that define his singing today.
From reality TV to behind the scenes
Singh first surfaced nationally on the reality shows Fame Gurukul (2005) and 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, but fame did not arrive overnight. His real apprenticeship came in Mumbai, where he spent years in the engine room of the industry as a music programmer, arranger and producer — including work for composer Pritam — quietly learning how hits are built before he became the one singing them.
Breakthrough: "Tum Hi Ho"
His career pivoted on "Tum Hi Ho" from Aashiqui 2 (2013), a ballad that became a cultural phenomenon, dominated weddings and playlists for years, and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. Almost overnight, he went from in-demand session talent to the most sought-after voice in the country.
A decade of dominance
The hits since have been relentless: "Channa Mereya", "Gerua", "Khairiyat", "Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage", "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil", "Kabira" and "Kesariya", among many others. He has collaborated most closely with composers Pritam and Vishal–Shekhar, and his songs routinely top India's year-end streaming charts. In 2026 he led the soundtrack of Cocktail 2 with the ballad Leher, and also lent his voice to Jab Talak and Tujhko from the same film.
Persona and live reputation
Off the mic, Singh is famously low-key and private, often performing in simple kurtas and shunning film-star flamboyance — an everyman image that only deepens listeners' trust in his voice. He is also a celebrated live performer, and channels much of his earnings into philanthropy in his home region of Bengal.
Awards and legacy
Arijit Singh has won two National Film Awards and a record-equalling eight Filmfare Awards, and in 2025 was honoured with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award. By resetting the Bollywood love song around restraint and sincerity rather than vocal showboating, he has shaped the sound of an entire era of Hindi music.
