Who is Marilyn Manson?

Marilyn Manson is the stage name of American musician Brian Hugh Warner, born on 5 January 1969 in Canton, Ohio, and also the name of the band he fronts. Formed in Florida in 1989, the group became one of the defining acts of industrial and shock rock, known as much for a deliberately provocative, theatrical image as for the music itself. The name combines Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, a pairing that signalled the project's interest in the collision of celebrity and darkness.

Rise and breakthrough

The band's debut album, Portrait of an American Family (1994), and the EP Smells Like Children (1995) — which included a cover of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" — built an early following, helped along by an association with Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, who signed and produced the group in its early years. The breakthrough came with Antichrist Superstar (1996), a concept album that made Manson a mainstream lightning rod and a fixture of late-1990s rock. The record's imagery and success turned Manson into one of the most recognisable and most argued-over figures in American music, praised by fans as a provocateur and condemned by critics who objected to the act's shock aesthetic.

Peak era and later work

Mechanical Animals (1998), a glam-inflected turn, and Holy Wood (2000) completed a loose trilogy with Antichrist Superstar and produced some of the band's best-known songs, including "The Dope Show" and "The Beautiful People". The group also became known for its reinventions of other artists' songs, with covers of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", "Tainted Love" and "Personal Jesus" reaching wide audiences.

Later albums kept the project active across three decades and continued to shift its sound: The Golden Age of Grotesque (2003), Eat Me, Drink Me (2007), Born Villain (2012), the bluesier The Pale Emperor (2015), Heaven Upside Down (2017) and We Are Chaos (2020) moved between industrial metal, glam and darker rock while keeping the core identity intact.

Sound and image

Manson's music blends industrial rock and metal with heavy electronics, layered production and a theatrical, confrontational lyrical style. The persona has always been part of the work — makeup, costume and shock imagery used to provoke and to comment on American culture, religion and celebrity. That approach made the act a frequent target of controversy throughout its career, and at various points a focus of debate among cultural and political commentators in the United States.

Controversy

Since 2021, Manson has been the subject of multiple allegations of abuse and misconduct from several women, including actress Evan Rachel Wood; the allegations have been widely reported and led to legal disputes, and Manson has denied them. This remains a significant and well-documented part of his public profile.

Recent releases

In 2024 he released One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1, and in 2026 announced its sequel, One Assassination Under God – Chapter 2, his thirteenth studio album, led by the single "Exit Wound". The new material continues his long-running partnership with producer Tyler Bates, who co-writes and co-produces the album, and marks the band's first full release cycle on the metal-focused label Nuclear Blast.
