Belgium and its national anthem

Belgium is a federal country in Western Europe, home to around 11.5 million people and to Brussels — its capital and the seat of the European Union and NATO. It is defined by its three language communities: Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north, French-speaking Wallonia in the south, and a small German-speaking community in the east. That trilingual identity shapes everything about the country, including its national song.

La Brabançonne

Belgium's national anthem is "La Brabançonne", born in the Belgian Revolution of 1830 that won the country independence from the Netherlands. The original French words were written by the actor Jenneval (Louis-Alexandre Dechet), who died in the fighting, and the music was composed by François van Campenhout. The lyrics were later softened by Prime Minister Charles Rogier in 1860, and since a 1921 decree the anthem has had official versions in all three national languages — French, Dutch and German — each singing the same motto: "The King, the Law, Liberty".
