Who is Anand Raaj Anand?

Anand Raaj Anand (born 14 November 1962) is an Indian composer, lyricist and playback singer who has been a busy, versatile presence in Hindi film music for three decades — equally comfortable writing the tune, the words and singing the song himself.

From jewellery to music

Born in Delhi into a family of jewellers, he left the family business in 1995 to chase a musical career in Mumbai. His first private album, Babu Tiptop, appeared that year, and one of its songs was soon picked up for a film — an early sign of his knack for catchy, commercial melody.

Career and signature work

His breakthrough came with the 1996 film Masoom, for which he wrote, composed and sang — the song "Chhota Bachcha Jaan Ke" becoming especially popular. Over the years he has served as music director on more than 90 films, lyricist on over 40 soundtracks and playback singer on dozens more, with notable work in Pardesi Babu, Kaante (which earned him a Filmfare Best Music Director nomination in 2003), Welcome, Shootout at Lokhandwala and Double Dhamaal.

A loud, celebratory style

Anand is closely associated with big, high-energy party and dance numbers — exactly the kind of crowd-pleasing sound that suits ensemble comedies and action films. As a triple threat who composes, writes and sings, he often stamps his own voice onto his productions, and his music tends to favour bold hooks, festive rhythms and instant sing-along appeal over subtlety. That instinct made him a natural fit for the masala and comedy films of the 2000s and 2010s.

Range across the industry

Beyond the party anthems, his long résumé spans romance, devotional and dramatic scores across more than 90 films, and his lyric-writing for over 40 soundtracks underlines how completely he understands the craft from every angle. Few Bollywood music figures have worn quite so many hats so consistently for so long.
