Who is Sonu Nigam?
Sonu Nigam (born 30 July 1973 in Faridabad, Haryana) is one of the most celebrated and versatile playback singers in Indian music. Often called the "modern Rafi" for his range and finesse, he has recorded in Hindi and many other Indian languages, moving with ease between tender romance, devotion, classical-leaning melody and high-energy pop.
Early life and start
He began performing as a young child alongside his father and built his early reputation singing the songs of legends like Mohammed Rafi. After moving to Mumbai to pursue playback singing, he gained national visibility as the host of the hugely popular television show Sa Re Ga Ma, which made him a familiar face as well as a voice.
Breakthrough and signature songs
He became a defining voice of late-1990s and 2000s Bollywood, with a catalogue that includes the patriotic anthem "Sandese Aate Hain" from Border, "Kal Ho Naa Ho", "Suraj Hua Maddham", "Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin", "Main Agar Kahoon" — and, with Alka Yagnik, the original 2002 hit "Ishq Kameena".
A wide-ranging artist
Beyond film playback, Sonu Nigam is a prolific recording artist in his own right, with successful non-film albums, devotional records and live concerts across the world, and he has received numerous awards over a long career.
Recent work
In 2026 he returned to one of his classics, reprising his vocal for Ishq Kameena 2.0 from the film Baby Do Die Do — a recreation alongside Alka Yagnik and Akasa.
