Who is Alka Yagnik?
Alka Yagnik (born 20 March 1966 in Kolkata) is one of the most prolific, decorated and globally streamed playback singers in Indian cinema. For more than three decades she has been a defining female voice of Bollywood, with a sweet, agile tone that has graced an enormous number of the industry's biggest love songs and dance numbers.
Early life and start
Encouraged by her mother, a singer herself, Alka began singing on radio in Kolkata as a child before moving to Mumbai to pursue playback. After early struggles, her big break came with "Ek Do Teen" from Tezaab (1988), an instant smash that launched her to the front rank of Hindi film singers.
Decades of hits
From the late 1980s through the 2010s she was a constant presence on the charts, with classics including "Taal Se Taal Mila", "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Dil To Pagal Hai", "Agar Tum Saath Ho" and countless others — and, with Sonu Nigam, the original 2002 "Ishq Kameena". Her voice effectively defined Hindi-film romance for a generation.
Records and recognition
Alka Yagnik holds a record-setting haul of Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and has been recognised among the most-streamed artists in the world, a testament to the staying power of her vast catalogue.
Recent work
In 2026 she reunited with Sonu Nigam on Ishq Kameena 2.0 from Baby Do Die Do, a recreation of their classic duet.
