Who is Anu Malik?
Anu Malik (born 2 November 1960) is one of Bollywood's most prolific and recognisable music composers, the son of composer Sardar Malik. Across the 1990s and 2000s he scored a huge number of hit films, becoming a household name, and later reached new audiences as a long-running, famously colourful judge on Indian Idol.
Career and dominance
Malik became one of the busiest composers of his era, turning out chart-topping soundtracks at a remarkable pace. His credits include Baazigar, Main Hoon Na, Murder, Fiza and Asoka, alongside the patriotic classics of Border, most famously "Sandese Aate Hain".
Critical highs
While much of his work was unabashedly commercial, he also drew serious critical acclaim — notably winning a National Film Award for his score for Refugee (2000). He also composed the original "Ishq Kameena" for Shakti: The Power (2002).
A second act on television
His decade-plus run as an Indian Idol judge introduced him to a younger generation and made his enthusiastic on-air persona a pop-culture fixture in its own right.
Recent relevance
His 2002 classic returned in 2026 as Ishq Kameena 2.0 for the film Baby Do Die Do, a recreation that carries his original composition into a new era.
