The Hanuman Chalisa itself is a 16th-century Hindu hymn of forty verses written by the poet-saint Tulsidas in the Awadhi language, praising Hanuman — the devoted companion of Lord Rama — for his strength, courage, wisdom and devotion. Recited daily and especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, it is among the most beloved prayers in Hindu practice.

English Translation version

॥ Doha (opening couplets) ॥
With the dust of my Guru's lotus feet I cleanse the mirror of my mind,
then sing the pure glory of Rama, which bestows the four fruits of life.
Knowing my body to be without intelligence, I remember Hanuman, son of the Wind;
grant me strength, wisdom and knowledge, and take away my troubles and faults.

॥ Chaupai (the forty verses) ॥
1. Victory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue; victory to the lord of the monkeys who lights up all three worlds.
2. You are Rama's messenger, the abode of matchless strength, known as Anjani's son and the child of the Wind.
3. Great hero, mighty as a thunderbolt (Bajrangi), remover of evil thoughts and friend of the wise.
4. Golden-hued and beautifully dressed, you shine with rings in your ears and curling hair.
5. In your hands shine the mace and the banner; a sacred thread of munja grass adorns your shoulder.
6. Son of Shankar (Shiva) and joy of Kesari, your might and glory are honoured across the world.
7. Learned, virtuous and exceedingly clever, you are ever eager to do Rama's work.
8. You delight in hearing the deeds of the Lord; Rama, Lakshman and Sita dwell in your heart.
9. Taking a tiny form you appeared before Sita; taking a fearsome form you burned Lanka.
10. Taking a mighty form you slew the demons and accomplished Rama's tasks.
11. You brought the Sanjivani herb and revived Lakshman; Rama joyfully embraced you to his heart.
12. Rama praised you greatly, saying, "You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat."
13. "Thousands of mouths shall sing your glory" — so saying, the Lord drew you to his chest.
14. Sanak and the sages, Brahma and the great seers, Narada, Saraswati and Sheshnaag the serpent-king,
15. Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions — even poets and scholars cannot fully tell your glory.
16. You did great kindness to Sugriva, uniting him with Rama and restoring his throne.
17. Vibhishana took your counsel and became lord of Lanka, as the whole world knows.
18. Though the sun lies thousands of yojanas away, you swallowed it, taking it for a sweet fruit.
19. Holding the Lord's ring in your mouth, you leaped across the ocean — no wonder in that.
20. Every hard task in the world becomes easy through your grace.
21. You are the guardian at Rama's door; none may enter without your leave.
22. All comfort is found in your refuge; with you as protector there is no fear.
23. You alone can hold your own power in check; at your roar the three worlds tremble.
24. Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near when the name of the great hero is uttered.
25. Constant repetition of brave Hanuman's name destroys disease and removes all pain.
26. Hanuman frees from trouble all who fix on him in thought, deed and word.
27. Rama, the ascetic king, reigns over all; you carried out his every task.
28. Whoever brings any heartfelt wish to you gains the boundless fruit of life.
29. Your glory shines through all four ages; your fame lights up the world.

32. You hold the elixir of devotion to Rama; may you ever remain his servant.
33. Through devotion to you one reaches Rama and forgets the sorrows of countless births.
34. At life's end one goes to Rama's abode, and is ever after called a devotee of Hari.
35. One need keep no other god in mind; serving Hanuman brings every happiness.
36. All troubles end and every pain is erased for those who remember the mighty Hanuman.
37. Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman! Show me grace as my own divine Guru.
38. Whoever recites this a hundred times is released from bondage and gains great joy.
39. Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains perfection — Lord Shiva himself is witness.
40. Tulsidas, forever Hari's servant, prays: "O Lord, make your home within my heart."

॥ Doha (closing couplet) ॥
O son of the Wind, remover of sorrow, embodiment of all that is auspicious,
dwell in my heart, O king of gods, together with Rama, Lakshman and Sita.

Victory to Sita's lord Ramchandra. Victory to Hanuman, son of the Wind. Victory to Mahadev, lord of Uma.
Shri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram. Shri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram.

Shree Hanuman Chalisa — Hariharan

💭 Meaning of "Shree Hanuman Chalisa" Song Lyrics

The Hanuman Chalisa is a forty-verse devotional hymn in praise of Lord Hanuman, composed by the poet-saint Tulsidas in the Awadhi language. Hariharan's rendition carries this centuries-old text — one of the most widely recited prayers in the Hindu tradition.

Across its chaupais, framed by an opening and closing doha, it salutes Hanuman as an ocean of wisdom, strength and virtue, and as the devoted servant of Lord Rama. It recalls his legendary feats — leaping across the ocean to Lanka, carrying the mountain of healing herbs — and praises his power to dispel fear, illness and evil.

At heart the Chalisa is about devotion, surrender and protection: it is recited for courage, strength and Hanuman's blessing, in the belief that sincere remembrance keeps hardship and dark forces at bay. It is faith distilled into a rhythm that has been sung for generations.

🎬 Behind the song: how "Shree Hanuman Chalisa" was made

This recording was produced by T-Series and presented by the label's founder, Gulshan Kumar, as part of its 1992 album Shree Hanuman Chalisa (Hanuman Ashtak). Hariharan, a trained Carnatic and ghazal vocalist, delivers the hymn in a clear, unhurried style set to a traditional melody and gentle orchestration rather than an elaborate arrangement — a restraint that helped make it the version most people sing along to. The recording follows the long-established devotional setting of the text.

🌍 "Shree Hanuman Chalisa" — Cultural impact & legacy

Few recordings are as woven into everyday Hindu life as Hariharan's Hanuman Chalisa. The hymn is recited daily by millions, and especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the days traditionally associated with Hanuman; this 1992 version became the soundtrack to that practice for a generation. In 2020 it was widely reported as the first devotional song to cross five billion views on YouTube. Its reach is inseparable from the rise of T-Series: under Gulshan Kumar, the label built an enormous devotional catalogue on affordable cassettes, widening access to bhajans and chalisas. Other celebrated renditions of the Chalisa exist — by M. S. Subbulakshmi, Lata Mangeshkar and Amitabh Bachchan among others — but Hariharan's remains the most heard.

📖 What is "Shree Hanuman Chalisa Song Lyrics" about?

"Shree Hanuman Chalisa" is the landmark 1992 devotional recording of the Hanuman Chalisa by Hariharan, released by T-Series and presented by its founder, Gulshan Kumar. The Hanuman Chalisa is a Hindu hymn of forty verses composed in the 16th century by the poet-saint Tulsidas — author of the Ramcharitmanas — in the Awadhi language.

Hariharan's rendition, measured and classically grounded, became the most widely heard version of the hymn anywhere. In 2020 it was reported as the first devotional song to surpass five billion views on YouTube — a reflection of how deeply this particular recording is woven into daily worship across India and the diaspora.

The track sits at the heart of the album Shree Hanuman Chalisa (Hanuman Ashtak), part of the vast devotional catalogue T-Series built under Gulshan Kumar, whose affordable cassettes carried aartis, bhajans and chalisas into millions of homes through the 1980s and 1990s.

⭐ Behind the song trivia

  • Hariharan's 1992 rendition was reported in 2020 as the first devotional song to cross five billion views on YouTube.
  • The Hanuman Chalisa was written by the 16th-century poet-saint Tulsidas — author of the Ramcharitmanas — in Awadhi, not Sanskrit.
  • The word "chalisa" comes from chalis, meaning "forty": the hymn has forty chaupai verses, framed by opening and closing dohas (couplets).
  • It is traditionally recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the days associated with Hanuman. Other recorded versions include those by M. S. Subbulakshmi, Lata Mangeshkar and Amitabh Bachchan.
  • This recording's album pairs the Chalisa with the Hanuman Ashtak — a separate eight-verse prayer ("ashtak" means eight) to Hanuman that devotees often recite straight after it.
  • The chaupai beginning "Jug sahasra jojan par Bhanu" is popularly cited as encoding the distance from the Earth to the Sun once its traditional units are converted — one of the most shared talking points about the hymn.
