Who is VM Mahalingam?

VM Mahalingam (V. M. Mahalingam) is a South Indian singer and music composer who performs predominantly in Tamil, as well as Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu. Career

He has been performing on stage since the year 2000 and made his first recording for a Tamil film in 2009. A tireless live performer, he has given more than 1,500 concerts in India and abroad, and in 2023 expanded into music direction with the Tamil film Kulasamy.

Notable work

Mahalingam has lent his distinctive folk voice to a long list of well-known films, including Komban, Sethupathi, Salim, Rajini Murugan, Maari 2, Ragalapuram and the epic Ponniyin Selvan — often on exactly the kind of rooted, high-energy numbers that demand a genuine folk singer rather than a polished pop voice.

Recent work

In 2026 he co-sang Karuppa Kooda Va, the folk-fusion lead single from the Tamil film Karuppu, bringing his traditional vocal power to Sai Abhyankkar's composition.
